Director's Statement
On making Matrescence
Matrescence is a deeply personal and universal exploration of motherhood, identity, and cultural disconnection. As co-directors, we came together to explore how matrescence — the transition to motherhood — shapes the lives of women across different cultural contexts from Australia to the USA, to Kenya and the United Kingdom. We wanted to shed light on this profound and often overlooked journey and its far-reaching emotional, psychological, and societal implications.
What we discovered along the way was a central truth: the isolation, unrealistic expectations and overwhelm many women experience in contemporary motherhood is often universal.
In Matrescence, we weave the latest groundbreaking scientific research on the maternal brain and the emotional, physical, and cognitive changes women experience. Through Claire’s eyes as the film’s protagonist, we begin to understand how vital it is to give language to this process — language that has the power to heal, empower, and reconnect us to ourselves and to our communities.
Through our collaborative work, Matrescence aims to highlight the need for a cultural shift, acknowledging how current patriarchal systems undermine and isolate mothers. We value the transformation women undergo during this life stage, and we hope this film sparks conversation around what motherhood can be, how it is framed in our societies, and how we can rebuild a more sustainable, empowering, and compassionate framework centring matrescence.
Ultimately, Matrescence is more than just a documentary; it is a call to embrace the transformation of motherhood with reverence, community, and cultural wisdom. Our hope is that by sharing these stories, we inspire women to reclaim their power and connect with the shared wisdom of mothers past, present, and future.
